With grant support and in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural
Resources Division of Watercraft, this program will provide opportunities to
train and/or certify canoeing and kayaking.
The OCCK program offers skills courses and instructor
certification in canoeing, river kayaking, river canoeing, coastal kayaking and
river safety and rescue. These programs are conveniently located near the

paddlesports educators including Pamela Dillon, Karen Knight and
Pamela S. Dillon
is the Executive Director of the American Canoe Association. From 1996 - 2001,
Pamela Dillon served as Deputy Chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Division of Watercraft. Pamela previously served 5 years as a volunteer on the
national board of the American Canoe Association and approximately 10 years on
the ACA Safety Education and Instruction Council Board. From 1990 through 1993,
Pam served as the project director for the ACA for development and
implementation of the National Livery Safety System. This project was produced
under a United States Coast Guard Grant and was in partnership with the
Professional Paddlesports Association.
Karen Knight has
been described as a “ballerina on the water.” The National Champion in
Interpretive Freestyle Canoeing, from 1996 until her retirement from competition
in 2000, An American Canoe Association (ACA) Kayak and Canoe
Instructor Trainer Educator, certified yoga teacher, Maine Guide, and
therapeutic recreation specialist, Karen is recognized

Instructor
Certification Courses
Instructor training is offered for persons interested in
teaching canoeing and/or kayaking for their scouting program, summer camp,
recreational center or local club. The course emphasizes learning how to teach
paddlesports, manage risk and perform instruction safely.
Each different Instructor program track offers Instructor
certification at differing levels based on an individual Candidate’s personal
skills and teaching ability. From the community volunteer who loves to paddle
the local pond to the whitewater professional boater, the ACA offers a
certification to meet the needs of the paddling public.

What and Where
Material will be
sent to instructor candidates approximately 10 days prior to the course,
including: What to bring; where to stay; individual teaching assignment;
textbook and workbook; ACA information packet.
· Cancellation Policy
No space is reserved without full payment received by the ACA. If the ACA cancels a course for any reason all money is refunded with the return of unused text book, workbook and handouts. Certification courses not meeting the minimum number of candidates will be cancelled 10 days (cut-off date) prior to the course start date. Skills courses with fewer than three registered participants will be cancelled 7 days (cut-off date) prior to the course start date. If a participant cancels a reservation less than 7 days prior to cut-off date all money will be refunded minus the cost of any books/materials and shipping and handling. After the cut-off date only the membership fees and the cost of the text book, workbook and handouts can be refunded with the return of unused text book, workbook and handouts.

Boating Safety Course for Paddlers

Course Description:
OPS starts with the one day Introduction to Canoeing Course
where you will learn the fundamental skills of canoeing, identifying hazards,
basic concepts in craft handling and self- rescues in calm waters such as lakes
or ponds. OPS is designed to provide safety training for camp counselors, summer
staff, scout leaders and others who require documentation but are not required
to be ACA certified instructors. After completing this course you must register
and complete an online examination to receive your documentation.
(OPS graduates are not given authority to teach any
ACA program)

calm sheltered water in a no wind environment. Instructors are authorized to
teach students fundamental skills including identifying hazards, basic concepts

This course requires a minimum number of candidates. If this course does not
meet minimum enrollment you will be given the option of participating in the
Essentials of River Kayak instructor
certification course on Friday, June 10th and Saturday, June 11th
or a refund, see cancellation policy.

Course Description: This
certification has been developed for those instructors interested in teaching
students the skills required to play on a river by catching tight eddies, making
sharp peal outs and difficult ferries. Instructors at this level are expected to
demonstrate a high level of teaching skills, presentation methods, modeling of
strokes/maneuvers, and river rescue skills. Strokes and maneuvers are performed
while kneeling in canoes using thigh straps, knee pads and supplemental
flotation. This course is taught on flatwater and rivers including Class I
rapids.

Introduction to Canoeing or Essentials of River Canoeing certification may be
awarded to candidates completing part or all of this course.

I rivers.

ocean environments in limited wind conditions and to teach students fundamental
kayak skills including identifying hazards and self- rescues in tidal water.
Note:
Introduction to Kayaking or Essentials of Kayak Touring Instructor Certification
may be awarded to candidates completing part or all of the course.
