Restart your computer. |

Make sure your username and password are entered in all lowercase. |

Make sure you are using the correct dial-up access phone number. |

Make sure the telephone cord is plugged into the "Line" jack of the modem, NOT the "Phone" jack. |

If you are using an external modem, make sure the power is turned on, and the serial cable is plugged into the computer. |

If you have call waiting, and you can't/don't disable it, incoming calls may disconnect you from the Internet. |

If you are getting disconnected after checking your email in Microsoft Outlook Express, check this connection setting. |
