Is the Postini service free?
MidOhio.Net provides this service free as part of our commitment to bring you the best Internet service available.

What if I don't want the Postini service?
Postini is user-configurable, allowing you to simply turn off one or both Postini email services.

To turn off junk email blocking: Click on the "Junk Email Settings" link at the top of your Postini Message Center. At the top of the "Junk Email Settings" page, click on the "OFF" button under "Junk Email Blocking."

To turn off virus protection: Click on the "Virus Settings" link at the top of your Postini Message Center. At the top of the "Virus Settings" page, click on the "OFF" button under "Virus Protection."

Does Postini make email slower?
No noticeable latency occurs, especially since email delivery does not typically occur in real-time. Postini enterprise-class servers are capable of processing millions of messages per day - each message within milliseconds. You will not notice a difference.

How does Postini handle security?
Postini takes the security and privacy of user data seriously.

  • Legitimate email is not written to disk.
  • Passwords are not stored and never transmitted in plain text.
  • Suspicious email directed to the Message Center is broken up before being written to disk, so only end users can access it.
  • Postini resources, apart from the web and email processing machines, are not accessible through the public Internet.

Do Postini services compromise my privacy?
No. All email processing is done through automated filters.

How does Postini know a message is junk email?
Postini uses an advanced filtering technique built on heuristic rules, lists of approved and blocked senders, and databases of known junk email to maintain the effectiveness of the rules system.

How do I login to my Message Center?
You will receive email notifications with login instructions when suspicious messages have been directed to their Postini Message Center. The provided link in the email will take you to the login page where you will need to enter your password and click on the "Log In" button.

What if I don't remember my password?
Your password is your MidOhio.Net email password, unless you have changed it. If you do not remember your password, email support@midohio.net or give us a call.

How do I change my Postini password?
Click on the "Account Settings" link at the top of your Postini Message Center. Click on "Set or change your Password." You will be asked to enter your current password, new password, and to confirm your new password. Click on the "Save Changes" button.

How often will I get notified that junk email is quarantined as suspicious junk email?
You will receive a weekly notice if new junk mail is being held in your Message Center. You can visit your Message Center to review them, or take no action. Quarantined messages will be automatically deleted every 14 days.

How am I notified that virus infected email has been detected?
You are notified immediately via email when an infected virus is detected in an email message. From the Message Center, you can safely review the infected email text.

Is it safe to view virus infected messages in my quarantine?
The virus infected message is safely viewable without fear of transmitting the virus to your operating system or installed software. You can then deliver it "as is" or remove it entirely.

Why didn't Postini block a junk email message?
The heuristic filters can block up to 95% of spam from reaching your inbox. Unwanted messages can still get through.

Block Senders: Add email addresses to the Blocked Senders list if you repeatedly receive objectionable email in your inbox from the same individuals or organizations. This list might include a spammer, someone who keeps sending you chain letters, or a subscription that you can't unsubscribe from. By adding a sender to the Blocked Senders list, all messages from that sender will be directed to the Message Center. Click on the "Junk Email Settings" link at the top of your Message Center. At the bottom of the "Junk Email Settings" page, enter an email address or entire domain (Ex. aol.com) in the "Block Senders" field and click the "Save to List" button.

Increase Spam Filter Settings: If you find not enough junk email is being directed to your Message Center, increase the filters toward aggressive. However, the more stringently you set the sensitivity, the greater the opportunity a "legitimate" message might be mistakenly quarantined. It is important to carefully set the filter levels to meet your personal needs - and to adjust them as you deem necessary. Click on the "Junk Email Settings" link at the top of your Message Center. Under "Spam Filters," adjust the master "Bulk Email" filter and four specific categories to a more aggressive setting.

Why didn't Postini block an address on my Block Senders list?
The heuristic filters can block up to 95% of spam from reaching your inbox. Unwanted messages can still get through.

How long does it take to deliver a message from my quarantine into my inbox?
When you deliver email from the Message Center, it is forwarded directly and immediately to your inbox. A copy is also placed in the Delivered Folder. Messages are permanently deleted from the Delivered Folder on a periodic basis.

How often is email deleted from the Message Center?
Suspicious email is kept for 14 days, after which it will be automatically deleted.

What if Postini directs legitimate email to the Message Center?
Unfortunately, some legitimate email may be erroneously directed to your Message Center. This is due to the subjective nature of email messages and what could possibly be considered junk email. However, with the right configuration, less than 1% of valid email is falsely identified as suspicious.

Deliver legitimate email: From the Message Center check the box beside the legitimate email and click on the "Deliver" button, or with the message displayed, click the "Deliver" button. Select the "Add Approved" check box and click on the "Continue" button to add the sender's email address to your "Approved Senders" list. This will allow messages from the selected address to bypass the junk email filter in the future.

Add Approved Senders: Add email addresses to the "Approved Senders" list if you want email from those senders to bypass the Junk Email Assistant, regardless of what filters may be active. Adding your friends, family and colleagues is an excellent way to improve the accuracy of your Junk Email filters. Click on the "Junk Email Settings" link at the top of your Message Center. At the bottom of the "Junk Email Settings" page, enter an email address or entire domain (Ex. midohio.net) in the "Approved Senders" field and click the "Save to List" button.

Decrease Spam Filter Settings: If a significant amount of valid email is being misdirected to your Message Center, decrease the filters toward lenient. Lenient filtering potentially lets more junk email through to your inbox, but also minimizes the risk of legitimate email from getting mistakenly directed to the Message Center. It is important to carefully set the filter levels to meet your personal needs - and to adjust them as you deem necessary. Click on the "Junk Email Settings" link at the top of your Message Center. Under "Spam Filters," adjust the master "Bulk Email" filter and four specific categories to a more lenient setting.
