Genealogy and Local History

The Library Collection in the Annex, at the DELAWARE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY focuses on material for Delaware County, Ohio and adjacent counties. Sources include vital records, county histories, census data, maps, newspapers, etc. The collection contains many microfilms and the IGI (for all of the USA and most of Europe), the vital records and compilations of materials found in the County Court House and elsewhere. This material has been prepared by members of the DELAWARE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY and the DELAWARE COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, and the Delaware City Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and others.

To supplement these resources the library has basic genealogy indexes, source books, many family genealogies, how-to-do books, directories and guides to county cemeteries, guides to Delaware County and Ohio research.

Our collection is on open stacks for easy access and browsing. There is a card catalog for the book collection, a surname index file, plus computer data bases of same. A vertical file and a photo collection are also available.

All visitors are requested to bring ONLY note pads and #2 pencils into the library.

The volunteer librarians are members of the Delaware County Genealogical Society, and will do their best to assist you in your research.

Equipment: Microfilm and microfiche readers are available for viewing the microforms in the collection. COPY MACHINES are available to make copies of flat and bound materials. MICROFORMS READER-PRINTERS are available to make printouts from microfilms and microfiche.

LIBRARY HOURS: Mid March to Mid November, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday 2:00-4:30 PM local time. CLOSED ALL legal Holidays. (Best to confirm by phone since all staff members are volunteers).

The NASH HOUSE, 1880's House Museum open Mid April to Mid November, Sunday and Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:30 PM local time. CLOSED all Legal Holidays.

NOTE: Special appointments may be made by calling well in advance for use of the Library at times and days not listed above, of for group tours of the house.

Letter Policy

Volunteers at the Delaware County Historical Society will respond to a specific question ONLY IF you enclose a stamped self-addressed legal-sized envelope. Research will be performed for Donations at the rate of $10.00 per hour, plus copy costs and postage. Address your query to Research Dept. Delaware County Historical Society, P.O. Research will be conducted by volunteers at the Delaware County Genealogical Society under the same conditions as above. A name search only, will be performed as follows: For a $5.00 donation, volunteers of the Delaware County Genealogical Society will conduct a surname search of the "Bouic Index of Delaware and Union Counties" (covering over 300 sources relating to the area). The search will include (two pages) of persons with the same last name, (if there are more you will be advised), a list of the sources and some possible researchers if further work is needed. Delaware County Materials

Atlases: 1866, 1875, 1908 plus 1849 map with land owners, and early county plat maps. Historical Maps of the area.

Cemetery Inscriptions City Directories

Census: Indexes of Ohio for 1850,1860 and 1880, microfilm from 1820 (Special Veterans census for 1890) to 1920 including mortality schedules.

Bouic Index for Delaware and Union counties covering some 300 sources. Miscellaneous church and family Bible records.

County Histories: 1880, 1895, 1908 and 1976 for Delaware and adjacent counties.

Family Histories - many in manuscript form.

Genealogical Periodicals: The Delaware Genealogist, The Ohio Genealogical Society publications, and a file of exchange issues of the publications of some 100 Genealogical Societies in Ohio. The National Genealogical Society, The Genealogical Helper, etc.

Newspapers: Microfilms of the early Delaware County newspapers, plus originals of the Delaware Gazette and the Journal Herald from the 1870's to 1965 (a few dates missing). Nine volumes of Abstracts of Deaths, etc covering the period 1821-1910.

Military Rosters, and Histories, DAR listings, grave locations of soldiers of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and a copy of the WPA survey of veteran's (through WW-I) grave locations.

Land Record abstracts and Tax Duplicates from 1809 onward are available.

Probate Records: Original records and index are available in our Library as well as early birth, Marriage and death records for the county. Some Naturalization information prior to 1906 is also available.

Births and deaths in Ohio have been recorded since 1867. Marriages and Wills were filed from the beginning of the county's formation. Information for marriages after 1949 and births and deaths after 1938 are kept by the Ohio Bureau of Vital Statistics. Death Records covering 1908 through 1938 are available on microfilm at the Ohio Historical Society, 1882 Velma Ave. (I-71 & 17th Ave.) Columbus, Ohio, Phone: 614-297-2510.
